Cuba\u2019s Moncada Day marks 72 years since July 26, 1953, when a 26-year-old revolutionary leader named Fidel Castro led a group of young Cubans in an attack against the Moncada Army Barracks in Santiago de Cuba. This was their initial strike against the U.S.-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista to initiate the Cuban revolution. While their assault on the dictatorship in 1953 was unsuccessful, it became a symbol for those ready to fight against injustice and for a better future in Cuba. After years of struggle, on January 1, 1959, the U.S.-backed dictator fled Cuba and the process of the Cuban revolution began with agrarian reform, literacy campaigns, housing projects, building a universal healthcare system, supporting the struggle against oppression and colonialism internationally, and much more. Over the past 72 years Cuba\u2019s Moncada Day has become an important annual celebration in Cuba and around the world as we celebrate the gains of the Cuban revolution. Join Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba as we come together to share great food, speeches, poetry, and music in Trout Lake Park!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
