A Statement by Friends of Cuba Against the U.S. Blockade – Vancouver
Today, we celebrate a victory for Cuba! The U.S. has removed Cuba from the unjust State Sponsors of Terrorism list SSOT, a result of Cuba’s resilience and the unwavering support of people worldwide.
As Cuba’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) stated, “The United States takes steps in the right direction, but the blockade remains in force.” The cruel blockade and US hostile policies “continue to harm the Cuban people and obstruct the development of their economy, with a high human cost for the population.”
Through actions like the Monthly Vancouver Car Caravans for Cuba and the “Cuba is NOT a ‘sponsor of terrorism’!” postcard campaign, Friends of Cuba Against the US Blockade Vancouver (FCAB-Vancouver) joined with countless others around the world in solidarity with Cuba. Thousands of postcards, addressed to President Joe Biden, were sent from Canada, the U.S., Cuba, and Europe to the White House, calling for the removal of Cuba from the SSOT list.
This victory shows the power of unity and international solidarity but it’s also a reminder that our fight isn’t over. The cruel US blockade still remains. The blockade continues to harm Cuba’s economy, limit access to basic goods, and hurt the Cuban people.
Let’s use this moment of victory to fuel our struggle against the blockade!
